REVIEW: Elysium - Feedback Metal Mind Records, 2003
7/10
Elysium - Feedback - cover art While most Polish death metal bands have directed all their skills and talents towards the brutal school (Vader, Decapitated, Behemoth etc.) there are a few interesting exceptions such as Elysium. This five-piece orchestra have absorbed a great deal of inspiration from the Swedish scene and if you are a fan of close to legendary bands like At The Gates and In Flames you will probably recognize the classic riffing on this album. Their previous two albums were very well received by the European metal press and were marketed and distributed outside their home country by the Swedish label Black Mark Production who are probably most known for having discovered Bathory. I do not deny the fact that the Swedish style shines through on this album but Elysium have definitely not been digging their own grave by copying the sound straight off. Instead they have enriched their sound with more progressive influences, incorporating pieces of a Nevermore and Opeth atmosphere. Their music is also generally thrashier than both In Flames and At The Gates. Elysium still have to work hard if they want to earn themselves a place in the upper elite of European death metal bands but they are very good at what they do, no doubt about that. An unusual lyrical concept and a successful series of live shows behind them makes Elysium one of the most interesting younger generation bands on the Polish metal scene at the moment.
