It seems as if it
is utterly impossible to review death / grind from Slovakia or the Czech
republic without comparing the material to older Napalm Death and this is what
I'm going to do here as well... In fact it is impossible to review any kind
of grindcore without mentioning Napalm Death. Embolism is from a city called
Kanianka in Slovakia and formed sometime around 1996 or 1997 if I am not
wrong. The music is very much inspired by Napalm Death as usual but the vocals
are more varied, going all the way from low guttural growling to high screams
with a weird twist to them. Sometimes they sound like older Carcass vocals but
unfortunately lacking some of the the depth and power that the one and only
Jeff Walker was in possession of. Just like most bands on the Erebos label
Embolism consists of musicians who know their instruments very well and there
are no real flaws in the production process either. I especially like the
heavy guitar sound which gives the album at least some edge to it. The problem
with this debut album from the band is that it lacks real diversity and
interesting song compositions. It isn't bad at all but it still somehow
manages to enter through one ear just to leave through the other without
leaving any trace whatsoever. If you like older Napalm Death and wouldn't
mind a copy with altered vocals then here's your
pick.
