REVIEW: Emerald - Calling The Knights Shark Records, 2002
6/10
Emerald - Calling The Knights - cover art Emerald is a Swiss band that was born in 1995 out of the ashes of two bands called Dark Crystal and Oppress. They have since then appeared on several sampler albums and recorded two albums on their own. This is actually their second self-financed album from last year that is now being re-released by Shark Records with two new bonus tracks. One thing I must say before starting to say things that will not be of much benefit to the band and that is that these guys are very good musicians indeed. The thing that works against them is that they are not the best song writers and some of the tracks on this album actually gets very boring very quickly. Playing a mix of modern power and classic heavy metal they will probably attract some attention anyway and they do deserve this. The first couple of tracks are classic heavy metal the way I like it but the vocalist sounds really, really, and I do mean really, awful. When the band started out back in 1995 they had a female vocalist named Véronique Remy and I would have preferred to listen to her instead. Emerald is a band that could become very big though if they only change their vocalist and focus more on the song writing process next time. I must say one more thing about the vocalist to finish this off. He isn't a lousy vocalist because he is doing the absolute best within his reach but he has a terrible voice, at least for metal.
