REVIEW: Emperor - Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk Candlelight Records, 1997
9/10
Emperor - Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk - cover art "Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk" starts off with a five-minute long beautiful keyboard intro but then the journey into the darkness begins with fast and furious symphonic black metal of the rawer kind and with lots of energy and power. The music on this album might not be as good as the production. It seems like most Norwegian bands have above average producers for some reason. There are some finer moment with top notch black metal art but there are also some tireing passages on the record. Emperor is doubtless a talented band and they are surely capable of producing material a slice bit better than this. The vocals are mainly the traditional black metal screeching of the better kind but there are also some pretty nice clean ones as well as spoken words here and there. Apart from the lack of melody this is a powerful and energetic piece of music art that should be appreciated by black metal fans for its pure, majestic and raw sound. No matter what you think about Emperor this is one of the best albums to come out of the Norwegian black metal scene. The album was recorded in the memorial hall of Grieg between October & December anno 1996, mixed and mastered between January & February anno 1997, engineered by Pytten & Jørgen, produced by Ihsahn, Samoth & Pytten and finally mastered at Strype Audio by Samoth, Ihsahn and Vargnatt.
