REVIEW: Emperor - Scattered Ashes: A Decade of Emperial Wrath (2CD) Candlelight Records, 2003
8/10
Emperor - Scattered Ashes: A Decade of Emperial Wrath (2CD) - cover art Here is the perfect opportunity for those new to black metal to get a taste of its breadth and depth in one purchase, and avoid the recent commercialized circus that has become "black metal" to many in the process. Seminal Norwegian act Emperor have aptly filled 2 discs in a "best of" concept with "Scattered Ashes..",and listeners can conveniently experience both the infancy and zenith of this global musical phenomenon in its 2-dozen odd tracks. From the songs which fanned the flames that engulfed Scandinavian churches in the early 1990's to their most recent ,and likely last, album "Prometheus..", and everything in between, including live numbers, most of your favorites will be here. Even the dangerously electronic remixes from their split with Thorns appear in a juxtaposition to the legendary talents of drummers Trym and Bard, and journeymen Ihsahn and Samoth. The fact that the discs are not arranged chronologically is somewhat likeable, as you'll find demo material nestled in between early raw songs and epic tracks from their mighty "Anthems…" album. Bands that put out "best of" albums are many, but bands that put out ones that matter, like the unforgettable Emperor, are few.
