Greatest hits and compilation albums aren´t something worth a smile, definitely. Music is something really unique to be portrayed in more than an album without changing nothing from the original version. Empyrium effectively disbanded some time ago so I didn´t see the point on releasing another bunch of songs right now. To the core: what can you find here being really new? A 60 page booklet about the band´s history. A good start to a compilation album, isn´t it? What about the music? Uh, here you can find a new version of “The Franconian Woods In Winter´s Silence” (originally released in their debut full-length) and two brand new songs “Der Weiher” and “Am Wolkenstieg”. Essentially, these are the interesting things on this edition. Is this album worth the buy? You decide. Hardcore fans won´t need to read these lines to put their rabid hands on it, sure. When it comes to the rest of the world, this is just another compilation (talking about the music itself) with the typical 2 or 3 unreleased tracks that usually don´t escape the “not bad” comment. If you don´t know Empyrium, this is an excellent start, since the song selection is quite accurate to follow the evolution of their style. Here you can find songs from every album, without understating any release and respecting the chronological order. Empyrium erupted in a shy beginning and created a brave pastoral sound in their most celebrated albums, which have given them a bright name in the dark folk scene along with acts as Ulver or Tenhi. Operistic low-pitched vocals and accoustic guitar passages have been the weapons used by this band to convey nature and romantic feelings to their notes. A classic band, of course.
