Melancholic Gothic Metal from Finland or as the band calls it "Machine driven melancholic rock"... I´m quite sure that most people will now start screaming : "Nooo, thanks, got enough of those bands already!" But End of You are quite different from all those well known Gothic bands that are appearing everywhere all over Finland.
Let´s start with a little introduction for those who aren´t familiar with this band.
They´ve been founded in 2003 by Jami Pietilä (vocalist, songwriter), the first one to join him was Lede, who might be already known to some people as the bassist of Kalmah. Later on Johnny (keys), Jani (g) and Mika (dr) completed the line-up. After this everything went quite fast for the quintet from Helsinki, they made a video for "Walking With No One" (one of their best songs in my opinion and THE song, that brought me to this band at the end of 2004). They recorded a 7 track demo and this demo was already so impressing that Sami Tenetz from Spinefarm records immediately signed them. For me this is already a proof that End Of You aren´t just one of those 08/15 Gothic Metal bands, but something special among all the bands in this genre. Otherwise they wouldn´t have got a contract at a well known label in such a short period with only one Demo. The story of success went on, their demo sold well and even sold out after only a few months. In November 2005 their first single 'Walking With No One' was released it was again very successful, so another single 'Upside Down' should follow in early 2006. At the end of March 2006 I finally got the eagerly awaited full length album 'Unreal'.
A few songs from their 2004 demo also found a place on this CD but in a re-recorded version that´s even better than the older version. (Walking With No One, Liar, Twisted Mind, Time To Say). So all fans who didn´t have a chance to get the demo can now at least get some of the songs.
The thing that fascinated me was the voice of Jami, I can´t describe what it´s exactly but there´s something special in his voice. It´s quite outstanding and again different from most (Gothic) Metal vocalists, I´ve heard so far. Very emotional and multi-faceted. And no, I won´t start comparing his voice to HIM or other bands, as it just won´t fit. I guess in this case you just have to listen to the CD or at least to the samples that can be found on their official page. The album itself starts quite calm with a wonderful song called "All Your Silence". Calm, but nevertheless powerful, a bit different from the normal EOY stuff but still it´s so typical for them. All through the record you´ll find lots of powerful songs that vary a lot in style and atmosphere. For example a slightly oriental breathed-on song like "Rome" (with great piano parts at the end), a more synthy one "My absolution" with nice heavy riffs or a darker one, again different and with female background vocals (done by Anniina), "Twisted Mind". Nearly all songs have a catchy tune potential I´d say, sometimes quite simple in a way but without being "popmusic" or so simple that you might get bored fast. This is an album that sounds good the first time you put it in your player but still grows by time and always remember : This is just their debutalbum! And not to forget : The sound quality. As the demo was already in a very good quality, this one´s even better, mixed at the Finnvox and MD studios by Hiili Hiilesmaa, so here´s also nothing to complain about.
To sum it all up: Quite a young band with lots of potential as they already found their own style, which is important nowadays when you want to have success over a longer time and want to stick out of the masses. If you get a chance to see them live, do so, they´re a great live band!
