REVIEW: Enders Game - Game Over Self-financed, 2003
6.5/10
Enders Game - Game Over - cover art Enders Game probably experienced the biggest moment in their career when they were given the chance to open up for In Flames, Soilwork, Chimaira and Unearth in July this year (2003) in their hometown of Atlanta, Georgia. Musically they don't have too much in common with any of these bands, except for maybe the thrashier side of Soilwork. "Game Over" is a four song mini album which the band have financed themselves in lack of label support. The lack of a label doesn't really matter in this case because these tracks all sound wonderful thanks to a professional production that probably cost the band some well earned money. Together with careful and solid song writing it all shows that Enders Game take their business seriously and are working hard towards a possible record contract. Enders Game have stated that they feel that today's musical scene is full of monotony and the contemporary metal scene is very weak. I couldn't disagree with them more. The metal scene has never been richer and more dynamic than it is today. New genres have been created and bands mix influences from all possible styles of music. If you only listen to one form of music, for example old Bay Area thrash or modern nu-metal then of course it is monotonous. Speaking about the Bay Area, this is where the musical roots for Enders Game lie. "Game Over" is full of crunchy thrash riffs and it is overall a very energetic and vivid recording, further accentuated by the vocals from Kevin Freeman who is doing his job very well indeed. These songs are also pretty melodic thanks to the craftmanship of rhythm guitarist Dave Merrill. Dave provides backing for lead guitarist Jarrod Johnson's harmonies and simple but efficient solos. Excessive solos can sometimes ruin a song completely but Enders Game know how to place them in the right places. Living on the border where 80s thrash, metalcore and aggressive nu-metal meet, Enders Game will surely find themselves quite a few fans in the near future. They still need to find a more unique sound profile though. You can easily find out yourself if this is something for you or not since the entire mini album can be downloaded from their official website. Stand-out track: "Shedding Faith".
