REVIEW: Ensiferum - Ensiferum Spinefarm Records, 2001
10/10
Ensiferum - Ensiferum - cover art If you haven't heard about Ensiferum so far, I'm sure you've missed something. Their same-titled debut album is really one of the most incredible albums of the year 2001 and one of the best, if not 'the' best debut album I've ever heard. Already the cover artwork and the band logo might give a first impression how fantastic this album is. I don't know from where it comes but here we have another unique Finnish band that has brought up its own style without copying anything. A fantastic mix of death metal vocals, folkish elements, incredible melodies ("Windrider", "Guardians Of Fate") - all in all a great variety of songs in all different speeds. I couldn't tell one single track that gets lost in this album, every single song is fascinating its own way. Sometimes it's the use of double-bass, great melodic guitar-riffs, the use of traditional instruments like the Kantele in "Eternal Wait" and not to forget to mention these epic choirs! This album is really well produced and even after the 20th spin in my player it doesn't show one single weak point. One thing for sure, you won't get a band like this that fast again. A great new band and this is just the beginning.
