REVIEW: Enslaved - Ruun Candlelight Records, 2006
7.5/10
Enslaved - Ruun - cover art With this being my introduction to Enslaved I must admit that I am impressed. Enslaved has been a name that I’ve known for years, but I never listened to anything from them. Makes me wonder why I haven’t checked them out yet. I was expecting a harsher more extreme sound, but what I heard was a band that has progressed with a well crafted sound. Recorded here is a psychedelic trip of blackened metal. The usual venomous vocals are present, which is a trademark for most black metal bands. But it’s when the clean vocals are sung, is when this album truly takes off. The music is textured with different melodies and catchy yet creative guitar playing. Throughout the album there are many different influences that shine, and end up making this recording sound like it would have been welcomed back in the seventies. I say that because there’s a huge rocking vibe to some of the songs here. At times Ruun drags, and the second half is less inspired than the first. Still a well executed metal release. To say that this is black metal wouldn’t give it justice. It sounds more atmospheric with a twist of progressive psychedelic rock. Damn fucking good listen and a perfect initiation to Enslaved. The title track “Ruun” is instantly a stand out. Great trip. If only more “black” metal sounded like this…
