REVIEW: Entombed - Clandestine Earache Records, 1991
9/10
Entombed - Clandestine - cover art While the Norwegians transformed the American death metal intto the more evil cousin called black metal the crazy metal kids of Stockholm, Sweden, adopted the style fully like everything else American but at the same time made it more melodic and dynamic. The scene grew quickly and soon there were bands like Tiamat, Dismember, Therion and of course the mighty Entombed. The most important thing for a band who aim at playing fast and brutal is to stay out of monotony at any price and this is exactly what these masters of death manage to do. This album was one of many recorded at the legendary Sunlight Studio in Stockholm and therefore carries the characteristic dirty sound that follows thereby. I have never been a fan of the Sunlight sound in itself because of the somewhat rough edge but for a couple of bands like Dismember and Entombed it has proven to be the most ultimate production available. Apart from the great musicianship and creative skills of these guys several tracks are spiced up with some spoken parts which perfectly adds to the evil atmosphere of this dark creation. "Clandestine" is to Entombed what "Blessed Are The Sick" is to Morbid Angel and this album contains some of the most exquisite brutal music ever performed.
