REVIEW: Entwine - DiEversity Spikefarm Records, 2004
7/10
Entwine - DiEversity - cover art Sometimes I'm wondering what's so special about Finland, a country hosting so many great bands of all different metal genres. During the last years a huge wave of new bands has reached us, and one of them is Entwine, a melodic gothic metal band which have released their fourth album entitled "DiEversity". I've followed them for quite a while now and of course I was curious about their new album. In the past time they were often compared with other bands and they lacked an own identity so to say. I can't really say that they got out of this mainstream cliché but they changed a bit with their new album. "DiEversity" shows (at least the beginnings of) another side of the band - a heavier side. Best example is the song "Someone To Blame" which is, compared to other Entwine-songs, really heavier and has a catchy chorus with great powerful guitar riffs. My favorite song on this album is "Six Feet Down Below" along with "Bitter Sweet" and "Lost Within", presenting one of the strongest elements Entwine has to offer - a powerful chorus, emotional, melancholic lyrics and a great melody. However I'm still wondering why there are always songs that sound so similar to each other. Take "Nothing's Forever" for example - I feel like I've already heard it before. It doesn't really matter from which point of view you look at this album, I feel like the title really fits, there is diversity in it. In my opinion they should add some more of these heavier songs and take some of the softer songs away, and the album would be better, even though the latter ones are one of Entwine's trademarks if you could call it like that. They are not the most innovative band, but if you liked the previous Entwine albums, don't hesitate to pick this one. Otherwise it's probably just something for genre-fans.
