REVIEW: Entwine - Gone Spinefarm Records, 2001
7/10
Entwine - Gone - cover art I've heard lots of different opinions concerning this band. Some people say that there are enough gothic metal bands out there, they sound all the same, aren't innovative anymore, etc. and others think right the other way around. First of all you just need to put all prejudices aside and simply listen to what this Finnish gothic rock / metal-band has to offer with their 2nd album. I wouldn't deny that Entwine sounds like HIM or like other similar bands, but this doesn't mean that they're not worth listening to. Of course I always prefer bands with an own innovative style, but sometimes it's not necessary for bands to draw my attention. Entwine is one of these bands. Mika Taurianien's voice is somehow different from other gothic bands and one of the recognizable trademarks of this band if I may call it this. Their songs have mostly catchy choruses, are very melodic and melancholic (that's what Finnish gothic metal bands have in common). The best song of this album is definitely "New Dawn" and if there were more songs like this one, the album would be almost perfect. The chorus is one of the best I've heard in this genre and it stays in mind for a very long time. Even though there isn't as much variety in this album as it could be, some songs like "Snow White Suicide" or "Silence Is Killing Me" have the hit-potential to let their album stand out of the masses. Most of the other songs are quite nice but nothing special. That's the weak point of this album; there's a lack of innovation. However, first of all you have to like this genre in general (like me), otherwise you might get bored with this album after a while. Entwine is not the best band of this genre, but they do have the potential to achieve something and they do have some great songs. If you're bored of bands like HIM and if you like the softer direction of gothic metal this might be a good choice for you.
