REVIEW: Ephel Duath - Phormula Code666, 2000
6.5/10
Ephel Duath - Phormula - cover art Ephel Duath is a two man project from Italy born in February 1998. In October same year they released their first demo called "Opera" which sold more than 1300 copies and was given excellent reviews in many magazines. In June 1999 they signed a record deal with the small Italian label Code666. "Opera" also reached the first position in the TOP200 Black Metal chart at Mp3.com with more than 16000 downloads in a few months. "Phormula" is their first full-length album and it´s a very interesting one. The music that evolves from this band is a very unusual kind of black metal, not as raw as many other bands but more melodic with lots of progressive and dark noise elements. The vocals are mostly screechy black metal style but there are also clean voices here and there and the lyrics are not satanic but emotional. The band has a strong will to experiment which is clearly reflected in their compositions and the sound is very complex and much thicker and compact than you might expect from a band consisting of only two members. Production-wise there is not a lot to complain about although it could have been better. Their yearning for experimentive music might be a little too strong for their own good but this release will certainly blow a fresh breeze of air into the black metal world. A very good debut album and it will be interesting to see what Ephel Duath can achieve in the future. "Phormula" was recorded, mixed and mastered by Gabry and Paso at Fear Studio in Ravenna, Italy, during December 1999 and January 2000. Visual design and computer graphics was done by Mauro Berchi from Eibon Records.
