REVIEW: Ephel Duath - RePhormula Elitist Records, 2002
6/10
Ephel Duath - RePhormula - cover art Ephel Duath was born in Italy in the beginning of 1998 and released their debut album "Phormula" on the native label Code666 and were one of the first signings of this new quality label. I wasn't extremely fond of their first album and it seems like they haven't improved a lot but rather the other way round. They are still extremely experimental and there is for sure no other black metal band sounding like them but to me it doesn't sound that good. There are still a few nice melodies and riffs here and there as it was on their debut but their sound is just too weird to be enjoyable and listenable. There is no structure, no red line to follow, only chaos to be found on this album. Don't get me wrong now, this album does have a fair amount of high quality music, it's just that the thin guitar sound and the excessive sampling gets a little too much in the end. If you are into avantgardistic and highly experimental black metal you might still want to check out this release because there are evidently a lot of people who really enjoy Ephel Duath. Note that this is not a completely new album since the first six tracks are all taken off their debut.
