Equimanthorn is a project created by Proscriptor who is more well-known for his work with Absu. Lyrically there is a strong link between the two bands as they are both centered around a strong interest in ancient Sumerian mythology. Musically there is a huge difference though. While Absu deal with raw and aggressive black metal, Equimanthorn is an ambient project with a dark, occult atmosphere. "Second Sephira Cella" is a much more mature effort than the 1994 debut and Proscriptor have gathered a very impressive group of musicians to aid him in the recordings of this album and give the whole concept a more complete appearance. Here we find musicians from bands like Melechesh, Absu and The Soil Bleeds Black who are all some of the most underrated bands in existence today. The music of Equimanthorn is hypnotic, exotic, dreamy, majestic, soothing and ominous at the same time.
The lyrics of the songs are whispered and recited, resulting in a ritual feeling which is also appropriate as they deal with invocations and magick. If you are a fan of darkwave and occult ambient music this is a very welcome release as it is one of the most interesting and impressing albums in this genre for quite some time. Brooding yet spiritual, covered in a dark shade yet uplifting, complex yet with an easy to follow flow, "Second Sephira Cella" is bound to make an impression on anyone that hears it, be it good or bad, but this is music that touches the innermost of your soul and lyrics which appeal to the intelligent mind. Equimanthorn is music for the future but rooted in the ancient past and can not be easily transformed into words, it must be experienced to be fully understood.
