Apparently this album was originally recorded in 1996 but due to various problems no proper release was carried out then. Since 2002 the Greek act Ereshkigal have been working on “The Raping Of The Divine” so it has been finally re-constructed and recorded. Now, ten years after, the small independent Spanish label Temple Of Darkness Records is the one that has decided to support the band in their strife through elements, happily concluded with the edition of their album. Ereshkigal could be defined as a faster version of early Rotting Christ adorned with other elements as tiny guitar licks and brief orchestral raids. Some parts are really weird like the passage on “The Final Victory” endowed with female vocals, quite strange although nice! However the album is mostly based on patterns once set by old school black metal bands from Greece, so Varathron, Necromantia or Rotting Christ easily come to mind during the listening. The simple guitar lines conduct the songs above the everflowing (and a bit linear) pounding drums and slight keyboard ambiences. “The Raping Of The Divine” concentrates on effective riffs and songs rather than complex or twisted landscapes. If you are familiar with Greek black metal you´ll know what I´m talking about. The thrash metal edge is much more evident and intense in the Hellenic vision and I must say Ereshkigal still carve further in this tendency. This circumstance makes the whole result more listenable and varied. Take for example those riffs in the title track and you´ll get some interesting stuff to blend with the most aggressive passages in the vein of classic black bands.
Greek black metal followers could feel rapidly appealed by this band without a doubt. Even though they aren´t reinventing the wheel and these songs aren´t certainly nothing special, their music is entertaining and enjoyable enough to have a good time.
