Esqarial is a name that you are probably not familiar with, mostly because of the fact that the band has not been very well promoted outside their home country of Poland until now. "Inheritance" is the band's third full-length album since its inception back in 1991 and it was released by their native label Empire Records already last year. Thanks to Crash Music (formerly Pavement) the band and album will now be marketed and distributed properly throughout most Western countries and this is something Esqarial truely deserve. Hailing from the Pope's country and indulging in the artform known as death metal is not exactly something that strikes anyone with surprise today but Esqarial are different. Not different in the aspect that they do not play death metal but different in the way they execute the music.
Already their previous album "Discoveries" was very well received by both media and metal fans worldwide because of the diversity of the release. Breaking a winning concept is not only unnecessary but also stupid. Re-inventing is of course not an evil but why should you re-invent yourself until needed? Esqarial have found their personal sound and I am glad that they stick to it. "Inheritance" is an unusually varied and uplifting death metal album despite being brutal. A wide range of emotional colors are shared, from raging red and melancholic grey to violent and hateful black. Deeply rooted in death metal á la Morbid Angel and Vader, Esqarial do not hold back heavy metal riffs, bluesy solos, clean vocals nor progressive Opeth sounding song structures. This is a band who will definitely not appeal to death metal conservatives but if you appreciate bands who have the courage to stray from the norm, which is necessary if you wish things to happen in life, then give Esqarial a try. You will not be disappointed, at least I know I wasn't.
