REVIEW: Eterna - Papyrus Scarlet Records, 2001
8/10
Eterna - Papyrus - cover art Brazil is perhaps mostly known for it´s flourishing death metal scene and of course Angra but there are also a couple of power metal bands hailing from that huge country. Eterna is one of them and this is the first album from the band but still it shows a band with a very mature sound. Even though there are some traces of classic Rainbow and modern progressive influences the band oozes power metal more than everything else, most notably due to the two vocalists. Eterna sounds a little more like the Italian power-epic metal bands than those on the German / Swedish scene which means a wider use of keyboards. Therefore keyboards is an essential ingredience in the Eterna sound and songs like "Mary's Son" and "Da Pacem Domine" show that they also know how to use them without excessing. This is really a great new band in possession of a vast amount of talent and two great power metal vocalists. Due to having two vocalists Eterna has a wide vocal range, from the traditional high-pitched power metal to the rock'n'roll-ish vocals on "Da Pacem Domine" and almost a Geoff Tate sound on "The War Is Over". They might not have what it takes to reach the top of the mountain yet but if you´re into power or melodic metal this is a band worth checking out.
