REVIEW: Eternal Lies - Spiritual Deception Arctic Music Group, 2002
7.5/10
Eternal Lies - Spiritual Deception - cover art The west coast of Sweden has been the home of many well known melodic death metal bands such as In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, Eucharist and Arch Enemy but there are still more to come. Eternal Lies may not be that well known to the metal crowds of the world quite yet but they are a band on the rise. The band was formed in 1998 and features the former Fatal Embrace member Tommy Grönberg on vocals. To me most melodic death metal has become rather standardized the last couple of years or so and it seems like there isn't much more to explore in this field. However, there are still some bands who manage to do it well even though they don't really turn out to be pioneers and Eternal Lies is one of them. This is their debut album but surprisingly it shows a mature band with skilled musicians behind the instruments. The songs are well crafted, very melodic and also enhanced by the presence of Tommy Grönberg's black / death metal roars. The drums don't always sound that good but apart from that this is a most welcome addition to the Swedish melodic death metal scene. If melody and aggression combined is what you crave for then you should not be disappointed with this release. The production is beyond satisfying as well.
