REVIEW: Eternal Reign - Forbidden Path Limb Music Products, 2005
7/10
Eternal Reign - Forbidden Path - cover art Eternal Reign is a German power metal band that features veterans from 80s bands like Sweet Cheater and Exploder. That doesn't mean that they are a bunch of relics who are stuck in the past. On the contrary, the band's second album "Forbidden Path" shows a very modern exterior, mixing influences from the European and American schools of power metal, everything dressed in a very powerful and clear production. It is a diverse recording, not lacking any relevant features of a successful power metal offering - fast sections, interesting and heavy riffs, melodies, guitar solos and catchy choruses, never close to cheesy. Front man Dirk Stühmer actually reminds me of Brainstorm vocalist Andy B. Franck in several aspects but he doesn't have the same charisma or depth in his voice. It is bracing not to hear the band sing about knights of steel and dragons but the innovations found on this album are very few, if any, and the song writing, despite being decently solid, is not good enough to make them stand out from the middle class of today's power metal scene where they rest comfortably at this point. The powerful drive and tempo changes of "Edge Of The World" do however show that there is a fair amount of potential within Eternal Reign that can be let loose.
