REVIEW: Even - Think Before Speaking Self-financed, 2003
6.5/10
Even - Think Before Speaking - cover art Even is a young Italian band which started out when a few friends from school teamed up to play Iron Maiden covers. Usually, once you've been doing the cover thing for a while most musicians tend to want to write their own material to test their skills at least for a while. The own compositions from Even are in a softer and less metal sounding style than Iron Maiden and could be labelled as AOR or traditional commercial hard rock more or less. It is mellow, warm and colorful and their way of using the keyboards make me think of Europe in their glory days in the 80s. Their sense for good melodies and song composition is very strong but as each song passes by you begin to wish more and more for a surprise in any shape whatsoever. The frontman Davide "Dave" Dell'Orto, also active with power metallers Drakkar, does have a small problem though. He is a very good vocalist, I mean he knows how to sing, but he does not have the voice necessary to pull it off. False notes rarely fit well into the music and unfortunately he does not have what it takes to push this band forward unless he improves in the future. Perhaps he is simply not used to this style of singing yet. Even have made a good first attempt and it is a comfortable background album that doesn't require constant attention. Stand-out tracks: "The Storm Is Over", "Hollow Music".
