REVIEW: Evenfall - Cumbersome Century Media, 2002
7/10
Evenfall - Cumbersome - cover art Evenfall is an Italian band that was born out of the ashes of the doom / death metal act Resurrecturis. In 1999 they released their debut album "Still In The Grey Dying" which gained them some attention from the metal crowds. The music back then was melodic black metal but since then the band has developed a lot which has also led to some line-up changes, most notably the addition of a female vocalist named Roberta Staccuneddu. While still maintaining the aggressive edge with black metal screams and death metal growls, her wonderful voice adds a very nice atmospheric touch to the band which they were really in need of. Musically they are moving closer to Lacuna Coil but with more electronic sampling and diverse riffs. If the band ever had any hardcore black metal fans among their admirers they have probably lost them with this album but they should be sure to find a lot of new open-minded fans who like to have their metal more varied. The music itself isn't exactly unforgettable and there are no melodies or vocal lines that really stick to your mind but it is the nice atmosphere that makes this album what it is. The album is unfortunately a little uneven and they use the black metal screams whenever they feel like it without caring about whether they fit in or not but this is still one of the most promising new Italian bands at the moment. Stand-out tracks: "Rawish", "Frontloader".
