Wolfbiker is the fourth album from Jacksonville based metalcore band Evergreen Terrace, and their first on a bigger record label. The five piece plays pretty standard metalcore with some crossover elements of thrash and punk. This is a formula that we have seen over and over again with the rise of this genre. However, what the band lacks on the creativity stage they more than make up for with their raw energy and sheer enthusiasm, which is on display here. Also in the band's corner is the solid production job. While I can't say I have heard a majority of their previous work I can tell you that the mix on Wolfbiker scores a high grade.
One of the first things you will notice on listening to this is that the pissed off level of the band seems to be very high. With song titles like “Chaney Can't Quite Riff Like Helmet's Pate Hamilton” (which also happens to be their MTV single) or another just simply entitled “Where There Is Fire We Will Carry Gasoline” ET shows they carry no shortage of attitude. Lyrically the band tends to go for more of a straightforward, yet still quite angry approach. A key to the sound on Wolfbiker (as with other metalcore records) are the vocal melodies contained within the riffing and breakdowns. ET undeniably know this and have put a lot of effort in refining the more melodic moments. When it works, it works well, with their hit single actually being pretty catchy and mildly heavy at the same time. In fact that can be said about many of the songs on this album. Overall these guys do not appear to be musical virtuosos and will probably not blow you away with their musicianship, but they will play loud, get in your face and try to win you over with their consistent tenacity.
After repeated listens, the final verdict on Wolfbiker is that Evergreen Terrace do not do a whole lot to distinguish themselves from other metalcore bands gunning for the same sound. However, what they do is done well enough, thus making Wolfbiker an enjoyable yet unspectacular listen. The guys have a new record coming out in fall of 2009, so it will be interesting to see the progression that is made between this record and that one.
