REVIEW: Evergrey - In Search Of Truth Inside Out Music, 2001
9/10
Evergrey - In Search Of Truth - cover art The guys that formed Evergrey started out in the 80's by playing in one of many death metal bands in the south of Sweden. While bands like In Flames and At The Gates continued down the death metal parth in different ways, Evergrey wanted to transform the energy of death metal into a new form of metal where clean vocals and prog influences play important roles. Now their third album is finished and the result is very impressive. The vocals from Tom Englund is better than ever, probably a lot thanks to his wife Carina Kjellberg who has helped him start singing. He actually sounds a little like David Coverdale of Whitesnake although Evergrey is a lot more metal sounding. Once again Andy La Roque and his Los Angered Recording studio was used for the production which could not possibly have been any better than this. The only thing I don't find perfect about this new release from Evergrey is that almost every single song is built the same way with a thick keyboard background, the powerful vocals from Tom, and a drum machine pattern. The songs themselves are often amazingly beautiful but in the end it gets a little too much.
