Once in a while there comes a band who stand on solid musical ground but who sound like no other band. These are the bands who eventually will find success and this is exactly what Sweden's progressive metallers Evergrey are experiencing right now. Chart positions, extensive tours and mainstream media attention is part of it all. I know that they hate being labelled as progressive metal but in my opinion progressive metal can mean so much more than just Dream Theater. It was only last year that "Recreation Day" was released and the band has already come up with enough material for a new album. Have they rushed the process and left the concept of quality control behind them? Luckily not. "The Inner Circle" is a little bit of a concept album based around the power that certain religious groups can have over people. The concept may be new for the band but the characteristics of the Evergrey sound remain the same. Then what is it that makes the band so special? First of all I would have to mention the vocalist Tom S. Englund's voice with which he is able to send shivers down the spine of the listener, especially when performing live, a chance you should definitely take if you have the possibility. Second, the band has a very special instrumental sound and song structures that make you realize instantly that it is an Evergrey song. "The Inner Circle" also features a real string section from the Gothenburg Symphonic Orchestra and female guest vocals by Carina Englund. The album never takes off to the same heights as the two previous ones but nonetheless this is Evergrey and disappointment is never in sight. Powerful, epic and passionate.
