REVIEW: Evildead - Rise Above Steamhammer Records, 1989
8.5/10
Evildead - Rise Above - cover art Evildead is one of those great, unacknowledged thrash metal bands of the late eighties/early nineties. With only four releases total, "Rise Above" is the only EP the band was able to release. The funny thing about this EP? It's not even their own song.

Yes, this four song EP is only half their's to be perfectly honest (by number of tracks, not material length). The title track, "Rise Above" is infact a cover of the original by Black Flag, and the final song, "S.T. Riff" is just the main riff from "Insitiutionalised" by Suicidal Tendencies (hence "S.T. Riff").

While "Rise Above" may seem like just another commercial song to try to get a band some spare spending bucks, "Run Again" is a prime example of standard Evildead, as well as "Sloe - Death", being heavy, insane, and not as pop-sounding. With blistering paces even Metallica would be jealous of today, the two original cuts on this EP stand out perfectly, and showcase what the early thrash scene was all about.

So if you can snag this release, then throw on your leather and sunglasses and throw this disc in! Even though the title track isn't the band's own, they make it their own. And with killer original songs and, hey, let's just face it, that Suicidal Tendencies riff kicks, this release shows that thrash was and still is one of the fastest forms of metal alive.
