This disc was accompanied by a press release with an overview stating the band’s intentions as such: “Classical brutal old school Swedish Death Metal in the fine tradition.” I suppose that will have to be okay, punctuation issues notwithstanding.
A biography was also included with this promo CD and it depicts Evocation as having formed in late 1991, going on extended hiatus in mid-1993, and reawakening in 2001 to see if anyone would be interested in their old material. This release is a result of that latest event. What is not made clear is that this CD actually contains the band’s 2 demos from February and September of 1992, respectively “The Ancient Gate” and the “Promo Tape.”
“The Ancient Gate” (tracks 1-4) was recorded in Sunlight Studios by the Tomas Skogsberg and is the strongest effort on display here, even if recorded in “just 16 hours.” Almost all the things you liked about the debut Entombed record are here -- if you liked that record, that is. Sound quality is pretty good, especially for a demo. The “Promo Tape” tracks (5-8) show a stylistic shift to slightly more complex songs and have different production cues but are still quite good for being a demo. Early Entombed is still the point of reference.
Though not groundbreaking, this would have been well received in 1992. In 2004 it appears merely as a throwback to what could have been but never really was. If you’re feeling old school and Bloodbath just doesn’t do it for you, which I couldn’t understand, check out Evocation. This just may even be considered tr00, kvlt, or n3cr0 -- y’know, to quote the kids.
