REVIEW: Evocation - Tales From The Tomb Cyclone Empire, 2007
7/10
Evocation - Tales From The Tomb - cover art One word - nostalgia. That would have been a short review but nonetheless a relevant one. Who said time travel wasn't possible? The Swedish band Evocation started out in 1991 and their cult demo "The Ancient Gate" was just about to get them signed as they split up because of musical differences in 1993. Bassist Christian Saarinen would eventually team up with Lake Of Tears handling keyboards. With a slightly revised line-up the band has now returned with their debut album "Tales From The Tomb", a record whose sound should be very familiar to all fans of early 90s Stockholm death metal. The classic Sunlight sound of early Dismember, Entombed and Grave releases has been powered up a bit to give it a bit more of a modern powerful edge but the crunchy and raw riffing of these bands is present in every song and there's even a bit of At The Gates thrown into the mix, particularly in the ultra-melodic "Chronic Hell".

As you may have realized by now "Tales From The Tomb" is completely uninnovative but it is a collection of solid Stockholm death metal tracks that should satisfy the taste of most genre connoisseurs. It might be of interest to mention that former Defleshed frontman Gustaf Jorde guests on "Veils Were Blown" and the album also features a cover of the early Entombed classic "But Life Goes On", an inclusion that fits in perfectly well. Cover art from Dan Seagrave (Morbid Angel, Entombed) puts the finishing touch on a complete package. You have heard it all before but the same goes for a new Motörhead album, right?
