REVIEW: Evohe - Tellus Mater Oaken Shield, 2005
6.5/10
Evohe - Tellus Mater - cover art France’s Evohe play straightforward traditional black metal: not symphonic or melodic, not black/death, and not quite true kult either. Their sound is reminiscent of Judas Iscariot and early Gorgoroth, with perhaps a touch of early Naglfar in the somewhat more conventional elements. As is said all too often in metal reviews, and black metal reviews in particular, there is no evidence of innovation anywhere on this album. That being said, whether or not “Tellus Mater” (which is Latin for “mother earth”, by the way) would be enjoyable is largely dependent on one’s attitude towards the dilemma that black metal currently finds itself in. There are two general schools of thought: 1) black metal died ten years ago and anything produced since then is derivative and uninspired, and 2) the style developed in the early 90s is so vital and profound that carrying it on is an essential and worthy activity. Those in the former group would find no value in “Tellus Mater”, while those in the latter would be more than adequately pleased. I myself fall somewhere in the middle, as I am not completely prejudiced against new black metal releases. But I still feel that Evohe have not done anything that special; for not only is their music unoriginal, but it seriously lacks immediacy and passionate expression. The music itself is certainly competent: snappy and devious beats are covered with distorted tremolo melodies, accented by a vicious black screech, and there is a nice variety of slow and fast songs. Once again, nothing specific to complain about, but nothing that you haven’t heard before.
