REVIEW: Evoken - Antithesis Of Light Avantgarde Music, 2005
8.5/10
Evoken - Antithesis Of Light - cover art There is no doubt Evoken demands full attention from the listener, according to the nuances their music exhibits. Their style is the patient kind, that one which demands some time to get into it, but if you´re lucky to get hooked, it´s worth the time. Since their crushing, dirty, first release, suggestively called “Shades Of Night Descending”, Evoken sound has been embellished in every aspect until the point of becoming one of the leading bands as far as dark doom metal is concerned. Evoken have one of their strongest foundations on the drums, more solemn than other funeral doom bands, setting steady paces with the classic snare/bassdrum(s) combination. The trademark is underlined with the clean sound of percussives, despite the drums sound is a bit too polished in this album, being it the only flaw we can remark about the production.

Keyboards must be held responsible of the ultra dark sound of the band, too: always present, incorruptible background. Vocals are deep growlings beyond imagination, murmuring the lyrics, flowing with no remorse. Gloomy, slow guitar notes alternate with distorted chords which perform the rhythmic side. Instead of diving into human introspection, Evoken chooses the creation of dark, solid ambiences as the goal of their songs, spawning melancholy branded in each of the notes. Desolation and darkness are entities surrounding the listener as the album is played. A perfect soundtrack for a contemplation of ruins. The style in general hasn´t changed a lot from the previous album, despite the first song (if we leave aside the intro) “In Solitary Ruin” has some blastbeats which could result a bit shocking for the doomster ears. Anyway, that´s just kind of a extravaganza; the album is slow, the way it´s meant to be. To close the lines: “Antithesis Of Light” is an excellent recording from an excellent band. My personal favourite Evoken album, indeed.
