REVIEW: Evolved - Unconscious Path Self-financed, 2006
6.5/10
Evolved - Unconscious Path - cover art Being formerly known as "Dol Guldur" (as a kind of reference to Austrian masters of epic black metal Summoning), this quintet from south Spain changed their name to "Evolved", and the musical style, as the new name implies, suffered the pertinent evolution towards the field of melodic death metal.

Thus, what we find in this self-edited demo is 4 songs of death metal in a remarkably melodic mood (melodeath would be a good word to define it), not quite aggressive, but on the other hand accessible for the inexperienced ear, without going into unnecessary modern commercial sounds.

The production is clear enough to be a demo, every instrument is in the right place and the mix is well-balanced, there are no problems for focusing on a particular instrument track on its own.

The opening song, "My Last Stanza" is the catchiest of the cd, short and straight, to offer a first immediate view of how the band sounds. The second track (the best in my opinion) has a more complex structure, beginning by a quite calmed introductory part to be followed by a faster one on the classic melodic death way, changing abruptly to a kind of techno-like short interlude which really fits well. The last to songs follow the same patterns: Alternating death metal-like passages with more atmospheric or acoustic ones.

The 4 songs constitute a coherent body, with elaborated compositions and a good production. Maybe I miss some technical details, such as more solos, for in the album there are more ambient or atmospheric parts but not many guitar or keyboard technical moments. The band is young and there is still so much time to grow as musicians, and this demo is a good starting point.
