Excruciate were part of the early Stockholm death metal scene in the late 80s and helped defined the classic brutal Swedish sound together with bands like Therion, Entombed, Dismember and Grave. Although not as famous as the ones mentioned these guys also deserve some attention. This double cd is a collection of the band's releases. The first cd contains the band's only full-length album "Passage Of Life" which was released on the French label Thrash Records in 1993. The second disc contains their split album with Epitaph from 1991, their demo "Mutilation Of The Past" from 1990 and also two previously unreleased tracks from an Excruciate side project called Korgüll. On the demo Therion's own Christoffer Johnsson handles the vocals and their music is also slightly similar to the very early Therion. It is sludgy and doomy but with many faster outbursts of rage. Excruciate doesn't stand out as part of the elite of the early Swedish death metal scene but they are a quality act worth checking out if you're into bands such as Crematory (the Swedish one), Nihilist and Demigod. It is tight, well-played but rather conventional death metal, still with a personal touch. It is definitely a good album but personally I prefer Mykorrhiza, the new band formed by Excruciate band leader Henrik "Hempa" Brynolfsson, which is one of the most unique death metal acts ever. Stand-out track: "Passage Of Life".
