REVIEW: Exhumed - Anatomy Is Destiny Relapse Records, 2003
7/10
Exhumed - Anatomy Is Destiny - cover art Here is full-length outing number 3 from these California natives, replete with gore and horror histrionics. As advertised, there is an unabashed Carcass vibe on this album, taking shape in creepy breakdown riffs on both the title track and "Waxwork". Matt Harvey's screeching has developed well, allowing him to hold a tortured note for quite a few bars, while his counterpart Mike Beams continues to erupt in sub-scale rants. The production this time is cleaner, but not overly polished, as is the playing overall, which may cost Exhumed some "sub-underground" clout but improve their following in the plain "underground". Also of consequence are the rock and roll solos of "Consuming Impulse", the Macabre-esque children's choirs on "Nativity Obscene" and "A Song for the Dead" (which seem to be played backwards in the latter track) and the surprisingly clever lyrics of the album. There is an almost British wittiness on "Anatomy is Destiny", a nice change from the standard futile attempts to shock which most gore-themed metal bands seem to waste their time on. This is still Exhumed, though there are some noticeable changes.
