REVIEW: Exorcist - Nightmare Theatre Cobra Records, 1986
8/10
Exorcist - Nightmare Theatre - cover art That wise science called rumourology whispered this act was nothing but a grim offshot carried out by heavy metal merchants Virgin Steele. Incidentally the credits on the LP sleeve include a certain “Mr. Lion” as responsible of the album production, nickname of Virgin Steele´s David DeFeis. Anyway, feel free to believe it or not, but putting your ears on “Nightmare theatre” could be revealing, since the music here is thrash metal although showing plenty of heavy metal nuances that remind loosely several 80´s heavy tunes. A closer analysis could invert that circumstance so we´d be talking about heavy metal played à la thrash! I know you´ve got the point. To make it clear, Exorcist play thrash metal using a deep heavy touch throughout the album, overtly manifested in some sing-along chorus, guitar licks or high-pitched screams. Vocals are violent and evil, low and eerie. Early Sodom could be a reference in the vocal aspect. Moreover, lyrics are dealing with exorcisms, the dark lord, witchery, etc. Some in-between tracks are conformed by vocal effects, trying to achieve the necessary horror atmosphere; it´s something in the XXI century may result naive, but we mustn´t leave aside the album was recorded in 1986! Nevertheless, this is not a cheesy childish album. Some people say Exorcist is one of the early death metal bands, I don´t agree at all, though some elements could be considered death metal traits. Without a doubt a subjective question. Maybe Possessed and Death underground forefathers?. Leaving behind any speculation about pointless definitions, “Nightmare theatre” is a quite good LP. 37 minutes of enjoyable and entertaining hellish heavy metal will please your soul and body. If I´m not wrong, “Nightmare theatre” was only released in vinyl but I heard about a re-print on CD carried out by a Brazilian Label, so godspeed on your journey towards getting a copy of it!
