REVIEW: F.O.B. - Follow The Instructions I.F.A. Records, 2003
6/10
F.O.B. - Follow The Instructions - cover art The band F.O.B. was formed in Tabor in the Czech Republic in 1995. I was very impressive by their 2000 demo "Blame" and now, three years later, they released this debut full-length album of their's for the small independent label I.F.A. Records. Unfortunately I can't seem to find their old demo right now as I wanted to compare it to the new material but it seems strange that I rated it that high back then becase this album is not that impressive. The technical abilities of all the band members are on a pretty high level but they don't have good enough ideas and the song writing skills to back them up which is very unfortunate because otherwise they could have been going somewhere with this recording. Right now I doubt they will cross Czech borders. Another sore point of the album is the production which is decent but it lacks power and so do the vocals from frontman Jiri Kovarik. He has a nice dark growl but not strong enough lungs to push his voice to the edge. Not bad but there is room for improvement and new ideas wouldn't hurt either. I'm not saying that they should change their style but going retro only works if you manage to catch the best of what used to be and F.O.B. do unfortunately fall short of their instrumental skills.
