FOG play a brand of American Black Metal that is more akin to the old school Norwegian Black Metal scene, though with actual production values as the individual instruments are discernible here. While some may want their Black Metal "tr00," "kvlt," or even "n3cr0" FOG crush onward with their own vision of excellent production and killer riffs in an utterly listenable Black Metal package.
Within the first real song, “In Magnificent Glory,” the bass guitar can be heard clear as day. How refreshing for a Black Metal band not named Impaled Nazarene! All kidding aside, this touch can be taken as evidence of a band proud to wear the badge of actual musicianship in the Extreme Metal scene when so many bands muddle out a few so-called songs that are more similar to a mudslide engulfing a concert in southeast Asia. [All apologies to victims (and family and friends thereof) of the recent tsunamis. For what it’s worth, I do sincerely hope Nasum’s Mieszko Talarczyk is found alive.]
A comparison to Goatwhore can certainly be made, particularly the vocal style reminiscent of the high pitched voice of N’awlins’ bastard sons. There is even some use of the baritone, semi-spoken style featured in Goatwhore on “By the Axe We Rule.” Incidentally, this song, introduced by a clean guitar passage coupled with an almost eerie electronic keyboard effect, lays waste to your ears and speakers (not in that order) with a pummeling riff of speed and percussive abandon. Killer! This album was recently re-released by Dark Horizon Records (2004) but has apparently been out since 2001 (on WWIII). FYI, the final track labeled “Outro” sounds like it was borrowed liberally from the Leviathan/large puzzlebox scene in Hellbound: Hellraiser II. A mercifully shorter version comprises the “Intro” track.
