REVIEW: Faith - Promo 2003 Self-financed, 2003
6/10
Faith - Promo 2003 - cover art In the 80s Candlemass were not alone to carry the torch of Swedish doom / heavy metal. One of the bands who were working hard in the shadows of the more famous doomsters were Karlshamn's Faith. The band originally formed in 1984 and they recorded a couple of demos before splitting up in 1987. Drummer Peter Svensson then moved to Gothenburg but as he returned to his home town Faith was resurrected in the mid 90s and now they have finally produced enough material for a full-length LP release in September 2003 through the small Swedish label Stormbringer Productions. This is a two track promo sampler which consists of "The Real Me" and "Now It's Gone" off that album. These two songs are slow, sluggish and doomy, almost bordering to more of a stoner rock sound at times, much thanks to the raw vocals from Christer Nilsson which I am not really that fond of. It's those kind of vocals which you either love or hate I think but since I am not like most people I still find myself somewhere inbetween. Faith is definitely less upbeat than Candlemass, relying less on catchy heavy metal riffs and more on traditional doom elements. An interesting move is the inclusion of trombone and keyharp in their music and especially the keyharp adds an extra level of melancholy to "Now It's Gone". A little bit too neutral and laidback but still decent old-school doom metal. It's hard to tell the whole story from only having heard two of eight tracks from the album as well.
