Maybe it's just me, but don't these guys sorta sound like a bad Broadway musical? I'm listening to the song "Skula, Skorpa, Skork" from this new album and I imagine some guy prancing around, making overly emotive faces, a bunch of chicks dancing around in fairy costumes. Now "Dreams and Pyres" invades my ears... My God! Is this Metal or the NYU theater department?
I hadn't heard much Falconer since the first couple of records, so I didn't know what to expect, but welcomed a second attempt at digesting this Euro brand of Power Metal. It's more of the same nonsense. What's the big deal? Why is this melding of Metal and Folk supposed to mean some sort of musical prowess? There are exceptions, but this whole Power Metal thing grows exceedingly annoying, predictable, and formulated.
Sure, Falconer are super melodic, hooky, and happy Metal. I suppose they could open for Trans Siberian Orchestra if they'd just throw in some 'Ho Ho Ho's'. They already have the actor/singer! Wow, I may be on to something....
Maybe I'm lost, but I don't really get it. There are so many bands doing this same exact thing, fast but simple leads, boring rhythm guitar, bass players picking up the rhythm slack, and fast but simple drums. Oh and the keyboards, those damn repetitive keyboards! Everything about Among Beggars and Thieves sounds like it's straight from the cookie cutter; uninteresting, uninspired, silly... which happens to be the current Power Metal mold. So call it genius if you want, I'll call it boring and pick up Mama Mia tickets instead.
