REVIEW: Falconer - Chapters From A Vale Forlorn Metal Blade Records, 2002
5.5/10
Falconer - Chapters From A Vale Forlorn - cover art Falconer... Ah, shit. Formerly Mithotyn with the viking / folkish black metal style, have presented us with a new entity altogether. When I heard there was no more Mithotyn I figured it wouldn’t matter because whatever they move onto would surely kick ass…… but I learned differently when checking out the Norwegian outfit’s 2002 release "Chapters from a vale forlorn". It starts off pretty good, but soon after the introduction I found myself hoping for more. I half expected something straight out of Mithotyn, but that never came and I was left with a mediocre power metal CD and repetitive tracks I couldn’t finish listening to. Don’t get me wrong, there are some really good riffs and they’ve obviously not lost their musical abilities, there are a few tracks that I do like, or at least parts of songs that grabbed my attention. It’s just a shame to me that they seem to have transgressed with musical style and complexity in comparison to their previous project. And the vocals just don’t do it for me. Anyway, If you’re into power metal, and not attached to Mithotyn, then you should probably check out Falconer. [Editor's comment: It's a great album and both Mithotyn and Falconer are from Sweden, not Norway :-)]
