REVIEW: Falconer - Falconer Metal Blade Records, 2001
8.5/10
Falconer - Falconer - cover art These days new bands with a unique and creative sound are very rare but here we finally have one in Falconer. In 1999 the Swedish metal band Mithotyn was laid to rest after recording their third album. The band leader Stefan Weinerhall went on to form a new band that we here see the first result of. Musically Falconer is very similar to Mithotyn with extremely melodic metal and Mathias Blad is definitely a singer worthy of the task. There is also a rather strong folk music influence in the music, especially on the bonus track that is an old traditional Swedish song with a modern twist. The bonus track is in fact one of the best songs on this album together with "A Quest For The Crown" and "Mindtraveller". There seems to be a war going on between clean and growling vocals in the metal world - some people only like clean vox and others like the not so clean ones. I don´t understand why one can´t appreciate both styles of singing (there are not only two styles but to make it simpler...). I mean, there are lots of bands proving that growling or screechy vocals can be done extremely well like Cradle Of Filth, In Flames, Old Man´s Child, Susperia, My Dying Bride etc. But there are also bands that could not be without the clean vocals like Iron Maiden, Metallica, Solitude Aeternus, Skyclad and Falconer. Fans of ultra-melodic old-school heavy metal should go out and buy this album right away because it is really one of the best albums in this genre for some time. Hopefully there is a lot more to come from this newborn band. What makes it so much better is that they are from my home area. The album was recorded, mixed and mastered at Los Angered Recordings in November 2000, produced by the band, engineered, mixed and mastered by Andy La Rocque. Additional female vocals on the album were done by Ulrika Olausson.
