Out with Mathias Blad, enter Kristoffer Göbel. Many fans were worried about the change of vocalists in Falconer earlier this year and feared that he would not be able to replace Mathias' powerful and dramatic vocals. To make it easier on the fans band leader Stefan Weinerhall decided that Mathias should do some vocals on the this album as well alongside Kristoffer Göbel. Falconer is more or less a heavy / power metal version of the viking metal band Mithotyn and just like back then the melodies can become a little monotonous at times. However, Stefan has developed his song writing skills all the time and Falconer is generally far more diverse and richer in influences than Mithotyn was. Yet the folky melodies are still hanging around. "The Sceptre Of Deception" follows the same given pattern as the two previous albums and as I like those very much I was not disappointed. The new vocalist is filling the shoes of Mathias very well I think although on this album he sings very much the same way as Mathias did, another method to make the transition easier for the fans. While Mathias had experience mostly from musicals and theatre singing, Kristoffer is more of a rock / metal vocalist, something that becomes evident in a couple of songs on this album. Perhaps we will see more aggressive vocals on the next release from Falconer but only time will tell for sure. Whatever happens I am sure that the final result will be great. Falconer is one of the very few heavy / power metal bands who have a personal and unique sound. One of the best releases in the genre so far this year. Stand-out tracks: "The Coronation", "Under The Sword", "Hooves Over Northland", "Ravenhair".
