Falkenbach is a peculiar act. The human being under the weird name of Vratyas Vakyas allegedly comes from Iceland, though it seems Germany is the real origin of this one man band whose only goal is to perform epic pagan metal the viking way. Falkenbach´s entrance to the scene was called “...En Their Medh Riki Fara...” and featured a competent foray into viking metal profusely tainted with black metal sound and medieval melodies performed with simple synthesizers and some accoustic guitars from time to time. All these things could sound typical and even though Falkenbach aren´t known for their technical stravaganzas nor ornaments, believe me if I say this band has something unique. Let me take you back to the times where sound quality, zillions of samples, expensive budgets and technical drills were not in the spotlight. Right in there, let´s take a look to this album: yes, the drumming becomes cozy at times. The keys are almost casiotone-like in the most shameful moments. The guitars lack of ressonance and effects. And we could keep on... However, this has something special. The clean vocals are clearly one of the trademarks of the band; they concentrate on sort of a narrative singing and the classic “ooooh” choirs thing is nothing you will find here. Black metal vocals are also present, so the songs flow everytime between black patterns and steady paces impregnated of pagan feeling. All comes clad in a midtempo veil albeit occasional fast passages can be savoured. The result is a quite enjoyable album, epic and groovy, which leaves you asking for more. When the spirit and the essence clearly prevail over technical duties, it´s time to bow one´s head. This immortal album is one of those cases.
