REVIEW: Falkenbach - Heralding The Fireblade Napalm Records, 2005
7.5/10
Falkenbach - Heralding The Fireblade - cover art With his fourth full-length album so far Falkenbach captain and creative genious Vratyas Vakyas continues to move into the more melodic realms of epic viking metal, once again enlisting the services of session musicians Boltthorn, Hagalaz and Tyrann. "Heathen Foray" with its clean hypnotic and semi-monotonous vocals opens up and is probably the strongest single track of the album. "Of Forests Unknown" is a more straight-forward and primitive black metal song, featuring raw vocals that work well with the music. "Havamal" immediately bring back memories of Bathory's viking era although it comes in a softer and more polished package. The first time you listen to "Heralding The Fireblade" it all sounds very majestic and impressive and I enjoy the simple but efficient intro sample of waves hitting the shore. It sets the atmosphere and mood just right for what is to follow - epic battle metal of the finer qualities. Even though Vratyas have composed very diverse material this time it lacks in complexity from time to time though which makes me want to add and change a few details in the songs myself but that is of course not possible. Still good and solid viking metal recommended for fans of the genre. Stand-out tracks: "Heathen Foray", "Heralder".
