Fall Of The Leafe was
formed in Finland in the mid-90's and in 1996 they recorded their one and
only demo "Storm Of The Autumnfall". The following year they signed a deal
with Defiled Records who released their debut album "Evanescent, Everfading"
in 1998. Now they have released their third album entitled "Fermina" on
their new label Icarus Records from Argentina (Trisol Music Group in Europe).
Inspired by everything from extreme metal through gothic rock to the
Scandinavian retro-rock scene they have created a personal brand of what I
myself would label as gothic rock. They have certainly come a long way from
the somewhat folk-ish melodic death / black metal they used to play in the
past. It may not be the usual pure gothic rock but this is certainly the type
of music that would suit fans of that particular genre. The vocals are
passionate, there is plenty of sad melancholy in their sound but also nice
emotional melodies and a thick atmosphere. Fall Of The Leafe could not
possibly have avoided also being influenced by that genuine feeling of Finnish
melancholy found in the sound of bands like Amorphis, Sentenced and more
recently Insomnium. Perhaps they are the next big band to leave the Finnish
shores for a more successful international career. The possibility certainly
exists but there is a little bit too much rock music here to fully satisfy my
taste. "Fermina" is nonetheless a professional quality release that should
be of interest for all of you gothic rock fans out there. Stand-out tracks:
"Feather Duster
Premiere".
