REVIEW: Fates Warning - Awaken The Guardian Metal Blade Records, 1986
10/10
Fates Warning - Awaken The Guardian - cover art Fates Warning were responsible for creating "Awaken The Guardian", one of the top metal releases of the 1980's. Far from their more sterile sound of today this album breathes life, energy and playfulness but most of all quality metal. Even back in 1986 they had a fairly progressive sound which made them quite unique and adding to this John Arch delivered some of the best vocals I've ever heard. Some people probably find them too high-pitched and annoying but I think they are just about perfect. Sometimes this album reminds me of the older Megadeth releases and there is something magical about the sound from the 80's that captures my attention even today. Fates Warning features some of the best metal musicians in the US and this is one of the classic albums that sould be in every serious record collection, at least if you are into metal of any kind. The first three tracks of this album are masterpieces not to be forgotten and even though it loses some of the intensity in the end it is still one of the best releases ever in the field of progressive speed / heavy metal. If albums like this one were released every single week we would be living in paradise (or hell for those of you who prefer that). This is a piece of beautiful audial art.
