Fear Factory is one of the subjects in the next series of Roadrunner's Best-Of compilations that also falls under the category of "The Roots of Roadrunner Records." Having myself been a fan of this influential band upon hearing their 1992 debut I thought their brutal blend of Death Metal with Industrial influenced stylings, as well as clean vocal parts -- back then a truly original venture -- was crushing and inventive. On this collection of Roadrunner-era Fear Factory tracks I am easily reminded of how great that debut record was and even how cool some of the follow-up material was. As well, however, I am reminded that this band almost parodied themselves on later material, though thankfully only one track from the woeful Digimortal is presented here. That mid-90s Napalm Death sounds like it was influenced by Fear Factory, themselves bastard children of Napalm Death, speaks volumes. How FF came to affect ND is evident on the selections from the debut record. Selections from Demanufacture show the Industrial influence coming to the fore while those from Obsolete show the band in full bloom. The cover of Gary Numan's "Cars" is just plain fun, though not necessarily one of the band's best tracks. If you want to familiarize yourself with this once great and influential band, check out this CD. Bonus round: "Scapegoat" shows Dino Cazares' Brujeria style through and through.
