On Prisons of Flesh there are a few things which you can expect to hear, mid tempo drumming, death metal growls, and some catchy riffs. Unfortunately this is the extent of what your expectations should be as Prisons of Flesh regrettably never transcends the adequate. The production quality is muddy which in turn makes the instrumentalists sound unnecessarily sloppy. The guitarists do a good job of weaving together catchy riffs but unfortunately these soon become overused in the structure of the songs making for a rather boring listening experience. Feast Eternal’s vocal duties are also performed repetitiously and range from a standard barked growl to a higher pitched pseudo scream/growl. Disappointingly the drummer also lends a painfully middling performance and don’t expect blast beats or double bass as you will find neither in abundance on Prisons of Flesh. The bass is either woefully absent or manifests as a low rumble in the background as is the unfortunate standard for many death metal releases. Indeed this album is far from perfect, but in it I hear a valiant effort made by musicians who genuinely wish to express themselves through this particular artistic niche and hopefully they will mature as musicians and thus become better equipped to articulate themselves in this field. However, I must say that this particular outing simply failed to astonish and while I will give kudos for a good try this falls rather squarely into my average pile.
