REVIEW: Finntroll - Visor Om Slutet Spinefarm Records, 2003
10/10
Finntroll - Visor Om Slutet - cover art A lush green forest submerged in mist and dusted lightly with snow. This is the feeling that the listener is submerged in when listening to Visor Om Slutet (Songs About The End) and don’t expect the feeling to change to drastically throughout the entirety of this cd. Something that a potential listener might note is that this particular work although nothing short of genius, differs a bit from Finntroll’s earlier albums. Not necessarily in the emotion of the songs as much as the fact that there are no aggressive vocals (although Wilska and especially Katla’s singing still sounds quite trollish) and no real humppa to speak of. With this in mind the cd still retains an epic folk styled quality which I am sure is not only due to the extreme creativity of the band, but also the amazing number of instruments that they play on this recording. Some interesting highlights include the almost highland styled troll dancing tune on track 5, the trolls eating on track 8, the chanting on track 9, and the singing on track 10 by Wilska which is actually quite good. This is the last cd that included Teemu Raimoranta (Thy Serpent, Impaled Nazarene) he was a talented individual and a good guitarist, I hope that he has reached whatever paradise he sought. To sum up this is an astounding piece of music that nobody should be without, art and creativity at their best, Highly Recommended.
