REVIEW: Finnugor - Darkness Needs Us New Aeon Media, 2004
9/10
Finnugor - Darkness Needs Us - cover art Finnugor is the project of Gabriel Wolf and Godslayer N. Vassago, two guys who have been working hard for quite some time now in order to make the name of this project known in all of the Black Metal universe. Interesting thing is about this collaboration is that one of the guys lives in Hungary while the other contributes all the way from Finland. Latest album, "Darkness Needs Us", is the third one in the Finnugor collection and it features 10 guest artists, among which Attila Csihar, ex-Mayhem, Aborym & Tormentor, Ville Sorvali from Moonsorrow, Christopher B. Wildman from Asgaroth and many others. The record is a powerful, beautiful addition to the Symphonic Black universe and to the Finnugor album roster. Sometimes folkish, sometimes very symphonic and sometimes just very black is the description that would best describe the record. Vocals on tracks 4,5,7,10 and 13 are performed by Gabriel Wolf and all other tracks are done by guest artists (which are mentioned below). The most beautiful song on the record might be "Wings of Kryy", which I think is a song dedicated to Wolf's "eternal love", and it has a very religious feel in it with Gregorian kind of singing combined with more agressive stuff over a black-ish church music theme. A most original love song, I would say, placed in an insane world of suicidal tendencies, where "dark lady" takes the shape of an agnel, sanity in a world of horror.

"Fire-Raiser of Devastation" is also an interesting track with interesting lyrics and a somewhat more playful attitude. All other songs are very good and they don't sound the same eighter - diversity is what gives a lot of extra points to the album. Lyrics too are great on the entire record, most amazing writing, and every one of the vocalists manages to give a different personality to each song. That's the best thing about the entire record. Well though out lyrics with beautiful music and terrifying vocals is what good black metal is all about. Mixing of these songs should get a few praises as well because it is done in a rather original manner, while it doesn't diminish the effect of the songs, but enhances them, and somehow makes them stand out even more. I'm just a bit surprized that Finnugot didn't get a better distribuition and a bigger label to promote this release. It is clearly state of the art what these guys are doing. And so is the artwork. I would recomend this CD even for a birthday gift.
